Mutcat Green Calabash Handmade Pipe, New. Mutcat pipes are made by Mutcat Cat, an Indonesian artisan residing in its northeastern Java province. A pipe-maker for many years, and a pipe-smoker for even longer, Mutcat’s pipes are frequently innovative in their use of alternative, home-grown materials and elaborate forms and finishes. This is not only because of a desire to offer pipe-smokers something new and unique, but because of Mutcat’s own experiences as one. Living in a tropical climate, Mutcat seeks to find novel approaches to pipe construction that can provide a cool, dry smoke whatever the weather. Those familiar with the history of smoking pipes will know that tree heather root, commonly known simply as’briar,’ is not the only material one can use to make pipes. Alongside clay and meerschaum, cherry, oak, and lemon trees – to name but a few – have also been used since the inception of the wooden tobacco pipes. This calabash from Mutcat uses hand cut ebonite for its stem, which is a staple of modern pipe-making, but it also uses three distinct varieties of Indonesian hardwood for the rest of the pipe. For the chamber, Lamtoro burl has been employed; for the bowl’s main body, rusticated teak; and for the shank ring, black palm wood. These materials provide not only a distinct aesthetic, but are notable for their heat and moisture resistant properties. The aesthetics of the pipe feature a suitably rustic and woodsy theme, with a forest-green stain and stem. Length: 6? / 152.4mm. Bowl Width: 0.72 / 18.28mm. Bowl Depth: 1.34? / 34.03mm.
