They are formed by hand (See photos above), bisqued to cone 08, then carbon trapped to achieve the desired effect. After making over five thousand pipes, we have developed an excellent design both for style and function. Is made from ceramic so it will not get hot like glass or metal. The Stem is designed to be graceful yet strong. The Pot is crafted with a tapering bore ending in a slotted outlet to promote even burning and less tobacco lost in corners. The Bowl is ergonomically contoured to fit your left thumb and index finger for a Made for Me feel. No-Tip Flat Bottom keeps your tobacco safe. Small Size makes it easy to carry in the palm of your hand or a convenient pocket. Wash the outside with mild soap and water. Use no solvents since they can be absorbed into the pipe. Clean the stem with standard pipe cleaners. Clay tobacco pipes have been around since the 1740’s. They were designed and primarily intended for tobacco use. Clay pipes imported from England typically have a small bowl and long stem and are made of kaolin (a fine, white clay); this type of pipe is common to Colonial-period archaeological sites. A number of different kinds of clay pipes were also produced in the US. A common type produced in the eastern United States in the 18th and 19th centuries has a comparatively large bowl with a short stem into which a longer stem (usually of reed) was inserted. Our tobacco pipes are an amalgamation of these two types. The tobacco pipe is individually shaped by my hand, making each pipe unique. Several of the photos show how a 5 inch tobacco pipe is formed by hand. Each of our tobacco pipes are constructed in this fashion. After being shaped and dried, the pipes are bisqued. The next step is most interesting and ancient. The pipes are re-fired directly in the fire. This is one of the oldest firing methods known. Pieces millennia old exist today. This black tobacco pipe was created by a process called carbon trapping. That is, it is embedded in sawdust during firing while denying it access to oxygen. The blackness of the pipe is in reality pure carbon searching for that oxygen. Please note the following statements. This product is for Tobacco Users. With proper use and care, you can expect up to 3500 years of functionality.
