The bent stem joins the shank in the usual way, but the airhole in the shank goes all the way past the bowl to the end of a foot which is capped. The smoke travel from the bowl through a hole that joins the airhole. The design is meant to collect moisture in the part of the airhole between the bowl and the foot.
