Acorn Freehand with Shield Tobacco Pipe. This Acorn Freehand with Shield is a fascinating little piece. A black contrast stain with maroon stain for highlights brings out the flame grain that wraps around the bowl of the pipe. A shield has been carved at the back of the pipe by the draft hole to add to the overall aesthetics of the pipe. A black stainless-steel tube serves as the draught hole extending back from the pipe to a faux tortoise acrylic mouthpiece. The acrylic mouthpiece fits snuggly on the end of the stainless-steel tubing, easily twisting on and off for cleaning. A brass fitting with buffalo horn houses the stainless-steel tube as it moves toward the tobacco chamber. The rim of the pipe is smooth with some plateau showing around the edges adding further interest to the pipe’s aesthetics. This pipe is 100% hand carved. Length:6.42 in. Weight:2.35 oz. Bowl Height: 2.0 in. Chamber Depth: 1.3 in. Chamber Diameter: 0.94 in. Outside Diameter: 1.85 in. Stem Material: Black Stainless-Steel Tubing with acrylic mouthpiece. I have been an avid pipe collector since 2007 after seeing a selection of artisan pipes available on an online pipe shop. I started carving my own tobacco pipes in 2020 falling in love with the whole process almost immediately. From selecting the briar for a particular piece, to the design, and finally to the carving the pipe and bringing the design to life. Since 2020 I have made over 25 pipes. I lean towards carving Freehand style pipes however I have carved pipes using more traditional shapes as well. My favourite traditional pipe shapes are the Cavalier, Ramses, Prince, Canadian and Zulu. Except for the Zulu, I have carved a pipe using each of these shapes for my personal collection and use. I have also carved a Nautilus. For the Cavalier and the Ramses pipes I used more exotic woods. The Cavalier was carved using Cocobolo while the Ramses was carved using African Mahogany, Maple Burl, and Lignum Vitea. Each of these pipes I made a briar insert to line the tobacco chamber and lined the draught hole with carbon fibre tubing. As a result, neither the tobacco nor the smoke touches wood other than briar between the tobacco chamber and the mouthpiece. I decided to sell the pipes I carved in December 2022. I do not use any machinery to carve my pipes making them 100% hand carved. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Tobacciana\Pipes\Other Collectible Pipes”.
