Dunhill Namiki Goldfish Tobacco pipe 2004. Dunhill’s association with the Japanese company Namiki dates back to the 1920s, the height of the Art Deco movement. The collaboration initially began as an experiment, with exquisite Japanese lacquer being applied to the Dunhill’s smoking accessories and writing instruments, most notably using Maki-e. It’s a painstaking process of intense detailing and is a traditional Japanese art-form that is over 5,000 years old. Here in Dunhill’s special Namiki series, artisans Mr. Michifumi Kawaguchi and Mr. Yutaka Sato handmade each pipe over a 14-month period, employing complex techniques and an elaborate refinement of the ornamentation. Starting with a base of briar, the pipe is layered first using Urushi, a lacquer, with details added using powdered gold and other precious materials, creating the image on the pipe. More layers of lacquer are added and are allowed to harden before being burnished to reveal the beautiful image beneath. The result is this stunning piece of functional art, featuring the image of a goldfish at the fore of the pipe, dazzling powdered-gold finishes on the upper bowl and rim, and a jet-black background. They did a few variations of art on pipes and fountain pens. This “03” Billiard by Dunhill and finished by Namiki is presented in familiar Group 4 size. The gorgeous bowl, adorned with the signature of Michifumi Kawaguchi, joins to an understated shank-and-stem combination that is bisected by a glimmering, gold-plated brass band, which elegantly parallels the gold-black theme of the Maki-e pictoral. This ultra-rare Dunhill is part of a limited series with Namiki, and there are no plans to revive the collaboration in the future, making this pipe’s availability an extraordinary opportunity for any avid Dunhill collectoJapanese company Namiki dates back to the 1920s, the height of the Art Deco movement.
