Wessex pipes were one of those quiet European house lines that never made a lot of noise, but they always punched above their weight. Most of them came out of the same Italian, French and German factories that fed Brebbia, Comoy and Chacom, in the seventies and eighties, the kind of places where the shaping was honest, the drilling was straight, and the briar was better than the price suggested. They’ve got that no-nonsense Continental feel to them-compact bowls, tidy lines, and a finish that never tried too hard. I have recently acquired a lot of 539 absolutely spectacular pipes, almost all new old stock, unsmoked gems from makers like Mastro De Paja, Taylor Made, Neerup, Chacom, Wessex and more!
