EJ Berk is a late-blooming American artisan who came to pipe making the long way around – through a lifetime of carving, sculpture, and pipe culture rather than factory apprenticeship. He didn’t seriously start cutting briar until around 2011, but he did the smart thing early and sought guidance from Grant Batson and Steve Morissette, which anchored his fundamentals in the modern U. What jumps out immediately in his work is the sculptor’s hand. Berk doesn’t rely heavily on the lathe and prefers to shape pipes almost entirely freehand from block to finish. Even his classical forms carry a slightly organic tension – thicker transitions, tactile surfaces, and a sense that the pipe was “found” inside the briar rather than engineered on graph paper. Sandblasts tend to be rugged and functional rather than hyper-refined showpieces, and his smooth finishes lean warm and grain-forward instead of flashy contrast exhibitions. Where he really starts talking in his own voice is the organic work. The spiral / nautilus motif shows up repeatedly, along with carved shanks, sculptural bowls, and occasional use of horn, bone, bamboo, or metal accenting. These pieces feel closer to studio wood sculpture than traditional Danish-line pipe making. It’s exploratory work – sometimes bold, sometimes dangerous – but always personal. Come and take it. This one is a Antique New England American Hanging Pipe or candle Box W/Hinged Lid. The box is 18 1/2″ tall and the actual box is 13″ tall and 5 wide and I believe its made of Walnut wood and in really good shaped for its age and the only issue i found was the bottom is glued on so it probably came off at some point and was reattached and some cracks on one side at the the bottom corner (see last photo). This is probably one of the nicest ones I have ever found and I will also be listing a early hanging slide top candle box from the same estate.
