The year 1848 is considered to be the date of foundation of Vauen, when Karl Ellenberg and Karl Augustus Zener opened the first German company for the production of smoking pipes in Nuremberg. In the same place, in 1866, another pipe workshop was opened by Gebhart Ott. In 1909 the company launched a massive offensive against both the German and worldwide markets. Two years later, the firm faced a severe test: the white dot mark on the mouthpiece of the best Vauen pipes was challenged by Dunhill, who used a similar mark.
