HISTORY The IL CEPPO brand has been in production since the late 1970’s but, in spite of its overall good value, is not well known in all parts of the United States. Partly this is because of a limited supply of pipes and partly because the brand has not been put in front of the pipe smoking public through a national venue. The Il Ceppo brand is made in Pesaro, Italy and is part of the famous Pesaro school of design that has also produced Mastro de Paja and Ser Jacopo. That all three brands have similar characteristics can be seen at a glance, but they all have significant differences as well. Giorgio Imperatori, an architect, had a passion for pipes and in 1978 begun to design and make IL CEPPO. Always considered a good value and very good for smoking the brand did not make folks stop and take notice until 1995 when Franco Rossi joined the firm. He brought with him a true elegance of design and a unique flair that now helps IL CEPPO stand apart. Vintage Briar Tobacco Pipes, Tobacciana & Collectibles. Some pipes are simply gorgeous and then there are others that are SPECTACULARLY GORGEOUS. With an elegantly curved, sweeping form, a well-poised and gently rounded bowl, a delicious, deep and warm finish, this il Ceppo Bent leaves little doubt as to its Pesaro roots. The combination of a soft and light honey toned (almost natural) warmth, the lovely grain patterns, a deep high gloss, smooth finish and it’s gorgeous profile leaves no doubt that it is a smoking instrument of some considerable quality and provenance. It’s BRAND NEW, it’s an il CEPPO, It’s HAND MADE in ITALY and it’s a picture of TOBACCO PIPE CRAFTING PERFECTION. Please, have a good look at the very delicate and exquisitely fine Straight and Flame Grains that traverse the full 360 degrees of the bowl, and the gentle nest of pretty and ever popular Birds Eye Grain on the heel and rim. It’s extraordinarily attractive. The slender, sweeping design of the shank and mouthpiece also lend this pipe an unmistakable air of grace. Is it any wonder that I love listing il Ceppo Exemplars. And please, accept my word or not, this pipe is a’SPECIAL’ and is listed at it’s cost, along with a handful of others in celebration of the New Year. So, no offers on this one please! This pipe emanates from the second period, 1996 – 2011 and the briar used in it’s production is of the highest quality used by il Ceppo. It is a HIGH GRADE and was quite an expensive pipe when first released. The shape gathered quite a following, not quite to the cult status of the Zulu for example, but nonetheless it has been a popular shape. They were available in both a smooth finish like this one, and also a blast finish. The most collected of them has been the lighter toned, almost natural looking pipes, just like this one with it’s welcoming honey tones. They all looked superb though. You will not find even the hint of a flaw on this pipe. It is supreme in manufacture. No fibs, no exaggeration, you cannot feel that join. You’d swear, that from shank to the bit end of the stem it was just one fluid piece with no joint whatsoever. The artisanship invested in this pipe is exemplary, but of course that is to be expected with any fine il CEPPO smoking instrument. Many in our small industry are known as experts, but real expertise is very rare indeed. Mario is a true expert regarding everything to do with pipe making, although he would never say so himself. A few of Mario’s credits? This man knows briar better than anyone with whom I have ever spoken, having dealt with all the briar sawmills throughout Italy over a period of thirty years.
