It has been in the fitted case ever since. It has never been used and I was once told that if you touch the carving the oils from your hands will affect the color change after smoking, I have no idea if that is true, but IT HAS NEVER BEEN TOUCHED! The fitted case is also in excellent condition. There is a slight scratch on one side. I also have a little suede pouch that I assume is to cover the carved portion. Heck, I even have the original bag of tobacco I bought with it! I’m not an expert on pipes, but have described it as best I can. Please ask if you have any questions.
