There are artisan pipe makers, and then there are guys who seem to have briar running through their veins. Sean Reum is firmly in the second camp. Based in Montana, Sean has spent more than a decade building Reum Pipes into one of the most recognizable names in contemporary American artisan pipe making. He made his first pipes in 2013, was carving full-time by 2017, and somewhere along the way went from talented young maker to a carver whose work belongs in the conversation with the best American makers working today. And the crazy part? The man is an absolute machine. Sean produces at a pace that would make most one-man artisan shops cry uncle, yet these aren’t production pipes wearing an artisan hat. They’re individually made pipes with the engineering, stem work, shaping, grain orientation and finish you’d expect from a serious high-grade maker. His design language is rooted heavily in the Danish school – clean lines, organic transitions, purposeful curves and an obsessive relationship with the grain – but Sean doesn’t simply imitate Danish masters. His pipes have developed a distinctly Reum personality. Classic enough to look right 50 years from now, but with enough attitude that you can usually spot one across the table. And he can flat-out sandblast briar. When Sean gets a block that wants to cooperate, the ring grain he pulls out of it can be ridiculous. But here’s the part I appreciate most: Sean builds pipes to smoke. Wide-open airflow, properly executed slots, comfortable stems and deliberate weight and balance aren’t afterthoughts. Sean is a pipe smoker building pipes for pipe smokers. Engineering matters just as much. His work has been carried by respected retailers in the United States and overseas, his pipes reside in some extremely serious collections, and his reputation among collectors has grown to the point that available pieces have historically had a habit of disappearing almost immediately. I also get to say something about Sean that I can’t say about most makers we feature here. He’s my friend. That makes for some damn good conversations, and I’ve developed an enormous amount of respect for both how he approaches the craft and how much he genuinely gives a damn about pipes. So when Sean offered me a handful of his pipes to retail through Come and Take It Pipe Works, I was pretty damn excited. These aren’t pipes I chased down on the estate market. They came from Sean. And I’m extremely proud to have them here. If you’ve been waiting to add a serious contemporary American artisan to the rack, Reum Pipes deserves your attention. Sean isn’t going to be one of the names people know. Come and take it. Lock up the good tobacco. Something just crawled out of the briar patch. Trever Talbert has a wicked imagination and the craftsmanship to turn it loose. His sculptural Halloween creations and dramatic sandblasts (among other things) have earned him a devoted following and this Goblin shows exactly why. He makes only a few Goblins each year, and this unsmoked 2014 specimen is a glorious little beast. Green briar, rippling grain, a jagged plateau crown, and a sweeping horn stem that looks right at home rising out of this woodland creature. That pointed heel gives the whole silhouette an extra dose of mischief. Old French stock, unleashed through one hell of an American imagination. A century in the making, twelve years unsmoked, and enough personality to require its own seat at the poker table. Come and take it. If that sandblast doesn’t stop your scrolling, check your pulse. An UNSMOKED Bruce Weaver bent Strawberry, wearing a dark finish that lets those spectacular growth rings do the talking. Look at them sweeping around the bowl and climbing the shank-ridge after ridge, with enough definition to make a briar lover weak in the knees. That golden-colored accent and crisp black saddle stem finish it off beautifully. Bruce Weaver was a damn fine American pipemaker. He learned from Lee von Erck and Todd Johnson, then developed a distinctive blasting style that gave his work its own unmistakable character. The man could pull extraordinary texture out of briar, and this Strawberry puts that talent front and center. Bruce passed away in 2019, leaving behind pipes that carry his craftsmanship forward. Finding one still unsmoked makes this a particularly special opportunity to put his work into your own rotation. A beautiful piece of Weaver’s legacy, with a blast that could steal the whole show. Italy supplied the inspiration. Jerry Crawford brought the fire. This UNSMOKED 2015 Castello 55 tribute takes that beloved, muscular shape and gives it a spectacular American artisan treatment. A stout bowl, that assertive forward lean, and a broad shank tapering into a sleek black stem-this thing has stance like a bull sizing up the gate. Golden-orange briar with a beautifully defined sandblast, growth rings wrapping the bowl and texture running clear down the shank. The bright metal accent adds just enough flash. Handsome as hell from rim to button. Crawford earned his stripes early: the THIRD pipe he made won Best Billiard in a contest judged by the great Rainer Barbi. That’s one heck of an introduction. His knack for classic shaping and careful execution makes him a maker well worth having on your radar. Eleven years on, this beauty is still waiting for its first bowl. A familiar collector favorite interpreted by a talented pair of hands-and dressed like a Hill Country sunset. Come and take it. Somebody get this thing its own spotlight. Pohlmann brought the thunder on this one. That plump bent egg wears a wicked ring grain blast-ridge after ridge rolling around the bowl, with a warm coppery finish lighting up the whole landscape. It’s got the rugged good looks of canyon country and curves worthy of a slow walk around. And that red-and-black Cumberland stem? A long, elegant sweep with fiery streaks, set against a golden accent that ties the whole thing together like a trophy buckle on a damn good pair of boots. Ten years later, you get the privilege of putting the first bowl through this beauty. Full-throttle American artisan swagger. This Pohlmann deserves the good tobacco and the best chair on the porch. Brothers and sisters, I stand before you today not to tickle your ears, but to test your resolve. For there comes a moment in every man’s life when he must decide: will he clutch his wallet in fear, or will he step forward in faith and lay claim to something worthy? These pipes before you were not stamped out by soulless machines in the dead of night. These pipes were carved by The Prince of Polk County, the Bishop of Briar, the Saint of Sawdust, Mr. Paul Coley of 447 Woodworks his own self. Yea though he may wander Georgia’s forested glens pantless and barefoot, his mastery of the block knows no bounds. Why these pipes were carved from honest briar that grew slow and stubborn, baked by sun and time, dug from the earth like a blessing wrestled free. They’ve been tested-by flame, by hand, by years of quiet contemplation-and they’re standing here today waiting on a new shepherd. Now some of you are thinking, I’ll wait. I’ll circle back. I’ll see if they’re still there tomorrow. Let me tell you something plain: tomorrow is the devil’s favorite word. Tomorrow is where all the good pipes go to die on someone else’s rack, brothers and sisters! These are not pipes for fence-sitters. These are pipes for men who understand that quality costs, that craft matters, and that when the right thing crosses your path, you don’t haggle with destiny-you shake its hand. Dig deep not because you’re weak, but because you’re strong. Because you know a good pipe will outlive a bad decision, and a great pipe will outlast damn near everything else you own. Long after the trends have turned to dust and the plastic has cracked, this briar will still be smoking cool and true. And when you light that first bowl, let it be known far and wide that on this day-you didn’t pass the plate by. Can I get an amen? Come and take it.
